A Moment's Folly

I am so glad it is all over. I was so angry with my teachers and my school life, wishing I was at home and not bound by anything.

When I was in Primary 5, I had made a mistake by joining the netball team. Well, the mistake doesn't lie with joining netball. Rather, it lies with gradually losing my passion and commitment for choir.

Looking back, I felt that it was incredibly stupid of me to hate choir as an entirety. Even though I was extremely mad at the people who had criticized my opinions and made me do things against my will, I should only be holding a grudge against those few people involved and not the whole choir. Singing is my passion and that will forever be. No matter how upset I was, that fact should never be changed. I feel very guilty for speaking those offensive words and hurting other people. I could have tried to understand the choir instructor's feelings when I missed each practice.

Why did I even join netball? I made that decision on a whim, not thinking about the consequences. I do admit that it was because my best friend who was also in choir wanted to quit and join netball. However, did I think about how much I loved singing and how nicely the conductor had treated me?

Moreover, my friend did not like singing as much as I did. She was better off in netball.

The only reason why the teacher had reprimanded me was because I decided to attend netball practice and missed choir practice. After my teacher had told me off, I got so angry with my life in choir and was easily irritated by any of the members or instructors. I even cursed at some people on my blog when I hit my limit of tolerance. I did not think about how much those words could hurt.

I wanted freedom. However, I did not know how contradicting that was. I claimed that choir was bounding me up in chains with all its restrictions, however, isn't joining two CCAs knowing very well that I could not quit choir even worse? That would be tying me down even more, with a much more hectic schedule and having to face the music for missing practices.

I had been living in self-denial and making up excuses for the wrong decision I made. Why did I deny the fact that I love singing?

I have learnt not to be influenced by others' choices and to just believe in myself. After all, you are you and you know yourself the best. You can lie to others but not to yourself. My heart aches when I think about the hurt I have caused to those people. I was just too naive and even though the teacher's scolding made me reflect on myself, I had failed to do the right thing and instead caused more misery in everyone.

Two years ago, I made a mistake that I regretted.

It was a bright Sunday morning and I was very excited as I was going to have a bicycle race with my cousin that day. He has been boasting about his cycling skills ever since the previous week. I did not believe him so I suggested that we have a race to determine who was better.

I polished my bicycle and checked the brakes before I set off to the park to meet him. At the park, my cousin said to me, “I’m sure you can’t beat me!” Convinced that he was just full of hot air, I ignored him. Soon, the race started. I overtook him easily. I knew it! My cousin was just boasting about his cycling skills.

“Almost there!” I panted, sweat dripping down my forehead. At the last 200 meters, my cousin picked up speed. I looked back and saw my cousin closing in on me. I was exhausted and my feet felt as heavy as stones. I had no strength left to cycle. Without thinking, I extended my hand and pushed him. He lost his balance and fell off his bicycle, landing on his right arm.

“Ouch!” my cousin exclaimed and looked at his hurt arm. I stood there, not knowing what to do. After I recovered from the shock, I helped my cousin to the clinic. The doctor said that he had fractured his arm and it would have to be put in a cast for a month. I felt very guilty about causing him to be injured just to win the race.

Soon after the incident my cousin forgave me as he felt that he was wrong to boast.

I decided that from then on, I would not be so impulsive and I will think before I act.

A Moment’s Folly

I have never regretted anything more than ever in my entire life. That one sentence changed everything.

It was the day of my graduation. I was excited about the concert and having tons of free time, yet I was also very sad to be leaving most of my friends and going to a new school without them. However, the period after the concert made me change my feelings immediately.

No one was with me. Everyone was either crying with their friends, or they were playing in the classrooms. I was roaming around the school all alone, without anyone to confide in, or to reminiscence with. I was already quite distraught with the effects of my hidden emotions, when someone I greatly disliked (A) approached me and threatened me to take a picture with her friend (B), a person whom I also dislike.

Hearing her talk to me like that made me speak rudely to her too, since I was already so tired out. I should have never done it. I have regretted it until today.

Afterwards, A continued to bully me. She whispered vulgarities at me under her breath, and threw my food onto the floor while pretending to bump into me. I tolerated it until I couldn’t take it any longer. I broke down right in front of most of my friends, who had been busy consoling B as she had been bawling her eyes out the most the whole day.

Finally, my friends heard me out, and upon hearing that I had been treated unfairly, scolded the other two girls for pestering me like that. B started spluttering something. I couldn’t hear anything; everything was a whirl. I felt so annoyed and hurt that someone could kick up such a big fuss over something as insignificant as a picture. Why should I be forced to take a picture with someone I hate? At that time I didn’t understand.

In the end, B and I never fully reconciled. Even when we tried to chat over the internet recently, we ended up fighting all over again. I realised that perhaps the two of us were just not meant to be friends. Our personalities are so different and we had never gotten along well in the past. On the other hand, A became a very nice person after breaking away from the influence of B.

I also realised that my friends will always be there for me when I need them, I just need to call for them a little louder so I can be heard among the crowd of people trying to separate me from them. I truly appreciate their company and their support during my time of pain, and I really love them for always caring for me.

A Moment of Folly

This accident happened when I was in Primary 5. I was attending my English class in my class room, which was taken by my new form teacher, Mrs. Khoo. My new classmates that year and some old classmates from last year were also there.

From Primary 1 to 5, I have seen many students who liked to rock their chair to and fro in class while listening to the lesson. I was no exception. Although most of the students have met with accidents due to it, and teachers have always advised us to not rock our chairs, I turned a deaf ear to it as I have been rocking on my chair on two legs for many years, without having accidents, hence I always consider myself as a professional in the “art of rocking of chairs”.

As I was rocking with the two front legs of my chair, I unconsciously tilted my chair to a steeper degree and place my whole body weight onto the only two legs which supported me. Suddenly, I felt my chair legs sliding through the smooth surface of the tile. I panicked, and in my mind, I knew what was going to happen next.

I was going to fall.

I tried to hold onto the table to prevent my chair from tilting steeper and steeper that would result in me falling down to the floor. But everything occurred in a flash and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground and the chair’s legs were pointing towards the table at the back. I was in an awkward position and was stunned and did not know what to do.

I stayed there, stunned, the seconds slowly ticking away as the teacher hurried towards me, after hearing a loud screech that was emitted from my rusty chair. Curious faces turned to face me. I hastily picked myself up and pulled my chair to a way which I could sit and sat down before more faces spotted me half-sprawling on the ground. I blushed furiously and wished that I had not done that foolish thing. Mrs. Khoo came and asked if I’m okay. I muttered softly, “I’m alright,” and I was grateful as she resumed her lesson afterward, so that the class could direct their focus on her lesson and not on me. I became aware of my face getting hotter due to the embarrassment. I didn’t talk throughout the whole class to avoid from getting to much attention in class that would lead to the topic of how I fell down.

After this accident, I heeded the advice my teacher had given me. If I turn a deaf ear to her advice, something even worse might befall me.
